Eating a large meal dumps huge amounts of fuel into your system at once – with the excess stored as fat—but frequent small meals deliver manageable amounts of energy over the course of the day. Here’s a quick look at the many health benefits of a six-a-day menu:

Sustained Energy. Food supplies the body with energy; the body then burns that energy to function. But it’s easy to upset this delicate balance by skipping meals or waiting too long to eat. “When blood sugar levels are up, you feel energized. When they crop energy levels plummet,” says Susan Kleiner, Ph.D., R.D. author of Power Eating. “So if you eat frequently to keep your blood sugar levels steady, you’ll feel more energized all day long.”

Speedier Metabolism. Your body is genetically programmed to conserve energy when food intake ceases. “Blood sugar fluxes every three hours, so if you don’t eat something to raise the blood sugar, metabolic rate can slow down,” says Dan Benardot, Ph.D., professor of nutrition, kinesiology, and health, and co-director of the Laboratory for Elite Athlete Performance at Georgia State University. Benardot has found that three-meal-a-day female athletes tend to have lower resting energy expenditures and higher body-fat percentages, which he suspects is due to the extended time between food intake.

Easier Weight Loss. It’s tough to lose weight when your metabolism is slowing down and your body is trying to hang on to every calorie. In addition, long gaps between eating lead to poor food choices, which can quickly turn weight loss into weight gain. “One of the stimulants to hunger is low blood sugar,” he says. “If you let yourself get really hungry and find a bag of unpeeled carrots or a ready-to-eat pound cake in the refrigerator, which would you choose?”

Mood Stability. Science shows a strong connection between food and mood, and eating more often can actually alter the brain chemistry, says Kleiner. The key is to include complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, all of which help maintain levels of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical in the brain. “It’s what anti-depressants are all about,” says Kleiner. “These drugs work to elevate serotonin levels or at least keep them from dropping too low. The right foods accomplish the same thing.”

Reduced Cholesterol. In one study at he University of Toronto, switching to multiple small meals reduced participant’s total cholesterol levels by about 98 percent and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels by 12 percent. The meal schedule kept blood sugar more even, helping to eliminate insulin spikes that can stimulate cholesterol production, according to lead researcher David Jenkins, M.D. {Eating frequent small meals is a tremendous idea,” he says, “though it’s going to mean a major lifestyle change for some people.”

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    Q: Do you deliver to Durham and Chapel Hill?
    A: We don't deliver to those areas (yet), but do offer a pick-up option for you on either Tuesday or Thursday evening at 5:30pm at various locations in surrounding areas. All you need to do is place your order and select one of the pick-up options and bring a bin/cooler large enough to get your meals back home. It's important that you're able to be there at 5:30pm as Michael has other deliveries back-to-back beginning at 6pm. Call Michael at 637-3345 for more information or to arrange other options.

    Q: How soon can we start?!?!?!?!?! :-)
    A: As soon as you like. If you can place your order by Tuesday or Wednesday, your “cookbook” gets e-mailed as soon as we receive your order, which then gives you enough time to change your order if necessary, after reviewing ingredients, etc, by Thursday evening (by refaxing the corrected order form).

    Q/A: Although I can see how this would be a great weight-loss program because of the proper portions, the amazing flavors which keep people interested and the whole-food ingredients, I wanted to say that I found it through "Endurance" Magazine and think it's a great option for quick healthy meals when I'm too busy to cook. I purchase 2 weeks at a time and put the food in my freezer for when I need it. Thanks for making this healthy program available to us athletes as well as those of us who need to lose weight!

    Q: I am interested in this service, but I have food allergies with soy, dairy and a couple of other items. Can you work with me?
    A: Absolutely. Each faxed order is confirmed with a copy of the recipes so that the order can be completed and tweaked, if necessary, based on your review of the items in each meal. Just select the meals that meet your criteria and you're good to go!

    Q: Is this geared to women only? Can men use it?
    A: While it is geared to women (as all of my services are), men can and certainly do use it and get up to 2000 calories a day. If he requires more calories, he can eat a couple more chicken breasts each day (for strength and muscle) or a few more starchy sides (rice, potatoes, etc, for endurance). Using this as a base provides a great deal of nutrients and health benefit, but those with higher caloric needs will need to add some portions into it.

    Q/A: I just wanted to say that I love the rotating menu! I order 4 weeks at a time. My first 4 weeks I was able to determine what my favorites were, and then I keep ordering what I love in subsequent weeks which makes this such a great program!! Tastes great, amazingly affordable, totally convenient and healthy. I'm so glad you are here for us!

    Q: Do you provide references of customers who user your service?

    Q: Do the meals come in containers that we must return every week, or are the meals stored in plastic disposable pouches? Are the meals labeled?
    A: The meals are labeled in plastic containers that may be kept or returned. If you return them we are able to keep our costs down and will reuse them as long as they are in good shape. We certainly prefer that they be returned, but it is not required. This is detailed with your 1st order.

    Q: I believe we understand the menu selection sheet, but let's verify that. If we are ordering for 2 people for the week of February 28, we would order 84 selections as follows: Breakfast: 14 total items, for example, a combination of 4 sweet potato pancakes, 4 vegetable frittatas, 6 berry crunch parfait. Then, etc., etc., etc. for each of the 5 other meals ...
    A: Yes, that’s correct.

    Q: To follow the plan properly, do I eat only the single selection (example vegetable frittata), with NO OTHER item for that meal except for water or some other noncaloric drink?
    A: Yes, that’s how it works.

    Q: We live in Orange County (approx. 1.5 mile off 1-85 close to Orange County line). I work in RTP, very close to Morrisville. If our home falls outside your regular delivery area, is it possible to meet in Morrisville near RTP where we could pick up our weekly meals during your after-5:00 delivery schedule? What are our other possible choices, given our home location?
    A: We have various "pick-up" options for those of you who fall outside of our delivery area. Just select that on your order form and we'll have your meals to that location on either Tuesday or Thursday each week at 5:30pm -- your choice! Just remember to bring a cooler large enough to store your food for the drive home (42 meals = a LARGE cooler).

    Q: If we must pickup the meals, could we fit 84 meals in a large cooler? How much space are we talking about? Any estimate of refrigerator and freezer space required?
    A: One 42 item order generally fits into a ~14" x 26" x 16" - 66 qt bins with some room-temperature items (fruits, bars, nuts, etc) sometimes placed in an overflow bag. If you had a cooler 2x that large you should be good to go.

    Q: If I place the order today, will it be confirmed in time to be delivered next Tuesday evening?
    A: We complete our shopping lists and food orders on Friday so as long as we have the order by Thursday evening we can deliver on Tuesday.

    Q: Who makes the deliveries and is the food taken directly to the individual's home?
    A: Although I carefully develop each menu and recipe myself, my Italian husband (Italian's love to cook!) Michael (919-637-3345) prepares and delivers the food. Michael cooks for 2 days for each delivery. All of the food is prepared within 24-48 hours of delivery and some is prepared within a couple of hours of delivery, so is sometimes even delivered warm (although we put it on ice!). He'll put about 3 days of food in your refrigerator and then put the rest (if it is freezable) in the freezer for you to pull out in 2-3 days. Otherwise what we prepare lasts well for 7 days.
